Nature of Work:

Specialist- This work is comparable to the work done by a reporter, staff writer or intermediate editor at an area newspaper or other publication in the area. Reporters are compensated as a stringer would be compensated. Work is specified on the job application including writing stories, newspaper layout, and editing. This work is also used for training in preparation for student's work desires. In addition, the salaries are structured to meet anticipated revenues to meet the student publications projected budget. This is semi-skilled work under the supervision of editor. Positions in this class are responsible for varies duties involving student yearbook writing, production and distribution under general supervision.

Some Examples of Work:

-Writing stories on a day-to-day basis for student newspaper.
-Editing copy on a day-to-day basis for publication.
-Layout of the newspaper on a day-to-day basis.
-Production work for printing newspaper on a day-to-day basis.
-Collecting information from various sources for writing stories.
-Distributing newspapers after printing has been completed.
-Operation of any equipment necessary to production of newspaper.
-Assisting in training and evaluation of any staff member.
-Supervising any staff member designated by the editor.
-Working in conjunction with editor for production of newspaper.
-Working in conjunction with editor for production of yearbook.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Basic knowledge of proper journalistic writing, including legal, social and ethical aspects.
Knowledge of use of all equipment as required for production of newspaper.
Ability to work with people.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Minimum Preparation for Work:

Desire to learn.
Some knowledge of journalism and writing techniques.
