PURPOSE OF THIS POLICY
Experience and research has demonstrated that students who live on campus adjust to college life faster and have higher GPAs and are more likely to graduate than students who live off campus. For this reason, all newly admitted first -year students without previous college experience, who are single, under 21 years of age, and not living with their parents in the Fort Collins area, are required to live their first two consecutive semesters in a residence hall.
All residents must sign a contractual agreement that includes meals and is binding for the entire academic year.
APPLICATION OF THIS POLICY
This policy applies to all newly admitted first year students, and all transfer students with fewer than 15 post-high school credits, who are single, under 21 years of age, and not living with their parents in the Fort Collins area.
POLICY STATEMENT
All newly admitted first-year students (Admissions Type “New”) and transfer students with fewer than 15 post-high school credits, who are single, under 21 years of age, and not living with their parents in the Fort Collins area, are required to live their first two consecutive semesters in a University residence hall. By definition, a first-year student has no post-high school credit even though they may have advanced-standing credit earned through concurrent high school/college enrollment, Advanced Placement (AP) and/or International Baccalaureate (IB). Accordingly, credits earned through concurrent enrollment, AP and/or IB do not apply towards living regulations.
Credits taken concurrent with high school and/or credits attained through Advanced Placement (AP) do not apply towards living experience. Failure to complete a residence hall contract for any reason, including disciplinary removal from the University or residence hall, will result in charges for room and board to cover the period from the beginning of the contract to the date of official check-out from the hall plus forfeiture of the complete housing deposit. Under specified conditions, residents are not responsible for the $150.00 forfeiture of deposit.
Residence hall staff and student governments share responsibility for establishing and enforcing living regulations and maintaining minimum standards of quiet, security, and privacy.
Inquiries regarding this policy, including guidelines for requesting an exemption, should be directed to the Office of Housing and Dining Services.
