PURPOSE OF THIS POLICY

The purpose of this Bereavement Policy is to provide equitable and compassionate support for employees during times of personal loss. The policy ensures a consistent framework for addressing bereavement, aligning with university values of inclusivity and well-being.

This policy is designed to resolve conflicts arising from unclear or inconsistent practices in granting bereavement accommodation, thereby promoting transparency and fairness. It acknowledges the diverse cultural and personal needs associated with grief while fostering an environment that respects the academic and professional obligations of all individuals.

APPLICATION OF THIS POLICY

This policy applies to all faculty, administrative professionals, and other salaried employees.

EXEMPTIONS FROM THIS POLICY

State Classified employees are exempt from this policy. For State Classified employees, bereavement leave is defined by the State Personnel Board Rules and Administrative Procedures. 

DEFINITIONS USED IN THIS POLICY

Relative: A member of the family including spouse, domestic or civil union partner, child(ren), parent, grandparent, grandchild(ren), sibling, nephew, niece, aunt, and uncle. This includes biological, adopted, foster or step relationships with either the employee or their spouse/partner. Allowed absences also may be granted for others not included in this list based on the relationship of the employee to the deceased.

POLICY STATEMENT

The policy ensures that individuals are afforded reasonable time and support to grieve while fulfilling their academic, teaching, or workplace responsibilities. Accommodations will be provided in an equitable manner that respects cultural, religious, and personal considerations related to bereavement, in compliance with applicable state and federal laws.

Through this policy, Colorado State University reaffirms its commitment to fostering a supportive and empathetic campus community during challenging times.

POLICY PROVISIONS

Department heads may grant eligible employees paid leave for time lost due to the death of a Relative to the extent deemed appropriate and advisable in view of circumstances, but not more than five working days.
